Volta Greentech raises 18 MSEK (approx. €1.7M) in a new funding round led by Axel Johnson to prepare the market launch of the next-generation methane-reducing feed additives for cows, reducing the climate footprint of food production.

Volta Greentech today announced a new funding round of 18 MSEK, led by Axel Johnson. With this investment, Volta Greentech has now raised more than 100 MSEK (appr. €9.5M) since its founding, strengthening the company’s ability to scale science-based solutions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture.

The new funding will support continued R&D as well as the upcoming market launch of Volta Greentech’s next-generation feed additive, Lome®, designed to significantly reduce methane emissions from ruminant livestock.

Science-backed, impact-focused
Volta Greentech develops feed additives that gently suppress methane-producing microbes in the rumen, reducing emissions at their source while preserving valuable feed energy. These innovations in animal science aim to advance modern farming by addressing one of agriculture’s largest climate challenges, enabling farmers to participate in emission reduction efforts with a cost per CO2 tonne-equivalents reduced among the most price competitive across industries.

Lome represents a major milestone in Volta Greentech’s development. By transitioning from large-scale algae cultivation to replicating the specific methane-reducing properties of the algae, the company has developed a product that is both more precise and highly reliable. While scaling algae cultivation presented significant challenges, Lome enables a far more resource-efficient and scalable production process. This shift is the key to meeting market demand and delivering the large-scale climate impact Volta Greentech strives for. The company is currently finalizing the regulatory application for the EU to enable a broad market launch across Europe.

Lome works in harmony with the cow’s rumen and its natural processes, reducing the unwanted 'energy leakage' caused by methane production. It fits seamlessly into existing farm routines, requiring no changes to established feeding systems. With a steadfast focus on animal welfare, research shows that Lome can ensure more efficient feed utilization, creating the potential for improved productivity and weight gain, making it a strong fit for modern farming operations.

Axel Johnson as long-term partner
Axel Johnson, one of Sweden’s largest and most successful family-owned industrial groups with a strong presence in the food sector, has supported Volta Greentech since 2022 and is leading this funding round. Through its investments in Volta Greentech, Axel Johnson supports long-term research and development aimed at reducing methane emissions – the single largest source of greenhouse gas emissions within the livestock industry and a substantial share of food emissions

“With Axel Johnson as lead investor in this funding round, we strengthen both our financial foundation and our industrial partnerships as we prepare to bring Lome to market,” says Fredrik Åkerman, CEO of Volta Greentech. “This investment allows us to accelerate the transition from scientific development to real-world impact, enabling farmers with great tools to battle global warming”

“Methane emissions from livestock are one of the most significant and challenging issues facing the food system today,” says Carl Dalerstedt at Axel Johnson’s investment vehicle Novax. “Volta Greentech combines strong scientific capabilities with a clear understanding of business, and we see great potential in their ability to translate research into scalable solutions.”
